About

Thirty Years of Floors

John Brugnone has been sanding, installing, and restoring hardwood since 1994. He still runs every job himself.

Where It Started

It Started With New Construction

John got into the trade in 1994, sanding new wood for a company that worked almost exclusively in new-home construction. The builder pipeline kept them busy year-round, and that volume built the fundamentals: how a floor behaves under the machine, how to move without leaving a mark, and how to make the tenth house match the first.

Repetition at that scale does not teach shortcuts. It teaches the one way that works every time.

The Company

Benchmark, 2005

John started Benchmark Wood Floors in Sterling Heights in 2005, roughly a decade into the trade, and later moved the operation to Macomb Township.

The company still runs the way it started: John prices the job, John is on the job, and John answers for the job. Every project is performed or directly supervised by him.

How He Works

The Person Who Quotes It Is the Person Who Sands It

You meet John at the estimate and see him again when the work starts. If something needs a decision mid-job—a board that is worse than it looked or a stain that reads differently than the sample—you are talking to the person who can make the call.

Sanding is dust-contained, and finishes are selected around what the room asks for: smooth, hand-scraped, or distressed. Old floors get evaluated honestly before you spend money on them.
